Plan Chronicle 1 castle defense with mercenary badges, stationary or mobile units, placement timing and player support.
In C1, the castle lord can hire NPC defenders through the castle's mercenary chief. This is a decision for the owning clan rather than an individual attacker or a visiting ally. Set the defense plan before the siege registration deadline: players still need assigned gates, healing positions and a response to a breached wall even when paid NPCs are present.
The C1 siege rules list sword, spear and bow mercenaries plus healer and mage support. A line of only melee units leaves fewer ways to respond to a ranged approach; support units need protection and useful sightlines. Start from the castle's actual choke points and the likely attack route, then choose a mix that fills gaps in the player roster.
| Example Gludio badge | Use in a plan |
|---|---|
| Hold a close approach | |
| Support a crowded choke point | |
| Cover an approach at range | |
| Sustain a defended position | |
| Add magical pressure |
Mercenary tokens are tied to the castle where they are bought, and the C1 rules do not allow players to trade them. The item catalogue has distinct badge IDs for castles, unit types and fixed or moving versions. Verify the castle name and type shown by the chief before paying. A cheaper looking badge from another castle is not a substitute for your defense.
The lord can prepare a unit to hold a position or move within its assigned role. Place fixed defenders where they protect a gate or support line; use mobile ones where a predictable patrol will not pull them away from the actual battle. The direction the lord faces when placing a badge sets the NPC's facing direction, so inspect each placement before leaving it.
A placed token is visible before battle, but only the castle lord can retrieve it. The same immediate spot cannot hold multiple tokens. At siege start the placed tokens become mercenary NPCs. Walk the castle in advance, leave enough space between planned positions and keep a record of where each badge was set so the clan can change a weak defense before the deadline.
NPCs supplement, rather than replace, registered defenders. Castle gates have HP and cannot be healed or repaired mid-siege once destroyed; the defending side's return cycle also depends on life crystals. Assign players to watch those objectives and call retreats. Review the broader siege guide for registration, battlefield penalties and how the relic changes ownership.
